Photos: Syrian children flee war

Dec 19, 2012

More than 75,000 children are among the Syrian refugees who have come to Lebanon to escape the civil war in their homeland. Many have lost their homes and have experienced bombings and shootings. Now, with the onset of winter, they face freezing conditions, many without adequate shelter. World Vision is provides food and hygiene supplies to refugees, also blankets, stoves, and fuel. The organization runs Child-Friendly Spaces — safe areas where children can enjoy fun activities and recover from the pain of war.

Most of the time, 4-year-old Yasmin’s home is a park bench. Sometimes she and her family manage to get accommodation for the night in a nearby mosque. Other times they have slept in an old train on display in the town center. The family cannot afford an apartment.

Mahmoud, 11, was shot in the foot during a trip to the store to buy bread. Later, he fled his home during a heavy bombing raid. Here, he listens intently during a lesson about the human body at a World Vision Child-Friendly Space.

Rain seeps into the two-room garage-like structure where 10-year-old Raed (far right) lives with his family and seven other relatives. Everything in the shelter is wet, including the bedding. Things were worse in Syria, where the family’s home was reduced to rubble in a bombing raid.

Taghrid, 11, lives in a ramshackle hut cobbled together with wood, cardboard, and plastic sheeting. The place is home to more than a dozen refugees. Taghrid tries to help her family by growing onions on a small plot of land that her family rents, but soon the land will be covered with snow.
